CAO communications officer, Eileen Keleghan, asks applicants not to make changes to an application based on assumptions about their Leaving Certificate examination performance. "Every year we experience a surge in last minute amendments to CAO applications. This is due to a number of factors, for example more time spent researching courses and the introduction of new areas of interest. "In 2015, fifty-six per cent of applicants availed of the Change of Mind facility at least once. "What we would like to advise applicants to avoid doing is making changes to their order of preference or course choices based on how they feel they have performed in their examinations. "If applicants simply follow the golden rule of placing all of their courses in their genuine order of preference they will be offered the course highest up on their preference list that they are deemed eligible for, if any" she added. Other advice for applicants from CAO is as follows: 1. Make sure to carefully check your application well in advance of the Change of Mind closing date to ensure that all of the course codes are correct and listed in order of preference. 2. When entering new courses or editing existing course choices, applicants must list all courses on the new choices list. 3. After making changes online, applicants will receive an email. Applicants are advised to check this email carefully to ensure that all of their information has been recorded completely and correctly. 4. Carefully read any correspondence from CAO, including the 'Statement of Course Choices' which is sent by post to all applicants who make changes to courses using the Change of Mind facility. Applicants will also receive an email showing these changes. SUSI urges students to submit their student grant applications before the July 8th deadline The national student grant awarding body, SUSI (Student Universal Support Ireland), is urging students who have yet to submit their applications for student grant funding for the 2016/17 academic year to do so now. The deadline for applications is Friday, July 8th. SUSI is currently in its fifth year of operations and opened its 2016/17 online application system, for new and renewal student grants, on April 5th. This was almost three weeks earlier than in 2015/16, and to-date SUSI has received 70,000 applications. Graham Doyle, Head of Communications & Customer Service with SUSI, has the following message for students: "We are expecting to receive approximately 110,000 applications for the 2016/17 academic year. We have received 70,000 applications to-date and we would urge students to apply before the deadline of July 8th to ensure that their applications receive priority". The national awarding authority has already awarded grants to 37,000 students for 2016/17, including almost 8,000 new students, the first time that such applications have been awarded so early. Mr. Doyle added: "We have changed our process this year and are awarding new applicants earlier than ever before. In previous years, Leaving Certificate students had to wait until they received their Leaving Certificate results and CAO offers late in August before we could award them. However, this year, based on learning from previous years, we are awarding students to the courses that they have identified in their applications to us, as soon as possible. We have already awarded almost 8,000 such students which is great news. I would encourage students who are thinking of applying for a student grant to visit our website www.susi.ie where they can review information about the eligibility criteria for student grant funding. In particular, they should use our online 'grant eligibility reckoner' where they can quickly, and easily, self-assess whether they may/may not be entitled to a student grant." Ms McNeill and Ms Nolan, the Link Modules teachers and their 5th year Link Modules classes received a talk from guest speaker Mr. Frank Feery on the 28th of January 2016. Mr. Feery is a retired Human Resources Manager from Solas. He mainly spoke to the class about work experience. He gave tips on all the do's and don’ts in the workplace. He also spoke about self-confidence. He emphasised how important it is for us as young people to have the ability to believe and have trust in our talents. Mr. Feery expanded our knowledge about the way one's employer thinks and the workplace in general. He also gave us a truly inspirational self-esteem speech.
