Extra Curricular Activities:

The budget cutbacks in funding for education removed paid substitution cover for teachers out of school due to uncertified illness or on official school business. Therefore, trips out of school for sports and other extra curricular activities will be greatly curtailed from January 2009.


Book Rental:

Following the withdrawal of the Department of Education Grant for the book Rental Scheme in the recent budget, the Board of Management has decided to continue the book Rental Scheme but has had to increase the cost to €120 per student per year. The administration fee will remain at €50 for 2009 and this includes 24 hour personal accident insurance and the school journal.

The following subjects involve project work as part of the examination and parents are asked to ensure that work is presented by the deadline set by the teacher.

Student Council

On Saturday 20 December, the Student Council along with the school choir did their annual carol singing for Crumlin Children’s Hospital. The event raised €1,055 for this very worthy cause. A sincere congratulations and thanks to all who participated over the three hours in the Bridge Centre, Tullamore.
The Student Council would like to thank all students who participated in, and contributed to Jersey Day which was run in the school in October. €500 raised in this event, was presented to the organisers of the school musical “Oliver”

Thanks also to all who have placed orders for the school hoodies which will be available for collection early in the New Year.


Green schools:

In October, a Green Schools Committee was set up. The committee comprises of 14 second year students and 6 fifth year students assisted by Mrs McNeill. The second year students collect and recycle paper around school on a weekly basis. For the month of November, and the whole committee worked very hard collecting old mobile phones and ink cartridges for the Green Schools Organisation who donated €120 to the school for their efforts. Our thanks to Kelly’s Roadhouse for their donation also.

Geography Field Trip:

Leaving Cert students carried out their Field Investigation on 4 December 2008 at the Kippure Education Centre, Wicklow. 44 students gathered information about river processes at two river sites. A very productive and educational day was had by all students. Accompanying teachers were T Godley, L Hickey, E Hynes and C Minnock.
